Sunscreen: More is always less
Minimalism has been a new trend recently, be it with living, celebrations, or even skincare and makeup. This article will focus more on skincare as I consider the subject an integral part of health and wellness. Specifically, we will discuss about sunscreen or sunblock or SPF (Sun Protection Factor).
With
numerous of its types (physical, chemical, or combination), brands (national
and international), and formulations (cream, gel, lotion) an important aspect that
is often understated is the quantity of sunscreen to be applied and the
frequency of the application.
The quantity of sunscreen
should be enough to screen the exposure area properly to protect the skin from
detrimental UV radiations present in the sunlight. Studies show that an amount
of at least 2 mg/cm2.However,
most of us only apply a quarter of the amount, insufficient to give optimum
protection. So how much quantity does that make? Full streaks of sunscreen on your
index finger and middle finger are determined to be enough amount of sunscreen
for a single application.
Sunscreen
wears off after a particular time, especially faster once it gets in contact
with water or sweat. That is why you are supposed to reapply it every 40-80
minutes if you are swimming, every 2 hours when you are actively working and
better to reapply it every 3-4 hours even when you are resting indoors.
In summary,
sunscreen seems to be quite an expenditure in your skincare routine. But
anything that serves your skin a benefit, especially one that has a significant
role in delaying signs of aging shall always be considered an investment. Not all
good sunscreens should be high-end brands. Talk to your dermatologist or your
pharmacist about suitable sunscreen for your skin not just in terms of its type
but also on budget. And, remember when it comes to sunscreen, what we consider
more of it can be less.
