Are you a good pharmacist?

Image
Pharmacists are undoubtedly YOUR DRUG EXPERT. As an expert, you should always have an answer to patients for the queries they put forward. Having said that, it does not mean you need to clear their queries advising this or that drugs. As a pharmacist, what I believe is, pharmacists' objective is to unload patients from load of medicines they have been suggested. What I am trying to indicate is, along with pharmacological treatments, pharmacists should also be well known about non-pharmacological treatments. So what are basic non-pharmacological approach pharmacists should be aware about? 1. Diet and Nutrition: Multivitamins and nutraceuticals should be a last resort if we have an option of fulfilling those requirements with diet. Disease modifying nutrition is a hot topic of discussion lately. I will discuss it in upcoming post. 2. Physical Therapy: There are several joint and muscles pain that can be relieved permanently or at least be alleviated to mild to moderate extent w

Topical steroids: Wonder creams not fairness creams

It was a usual day at work. One woman, who happened to be an in-patient visitor stopped by the hospital pharmacy asking for a medicine showing its packaging if it is available. I checked over and came to know she is asking for a steroidal cream. Upon inquiry along with also noticing melasma-like dark spots on her face, if it was physician prescribed, she stated, it was recommended by her friend who overcame melasma after its regular use and her friend had suggested it would work wonders on her face too. Over a short period of use of topical steroids, the result might be lighter skin, the disappearance of dark spots, and a softer texture which is what we all want.  However, upon prolonged use, it causes epidermal thinning, exposing the deeper and sensitive layer of skin which when comes in contact with harsh UV radiations from usual sunlight, can cause skin burn and thus permanent damage to your skin. Meanwhile, topical corticosteroids can penetrate through the skin to the blood

NSAIDs are not merely painkillers

A friend of mine visited a doctor after his severe sore throat. The doctor examined him, said it was just a viral infection, and prescribed him NSAIDs for pain and fever for three days. Upon asking, what medicines have he been suggested, he replied with an unsatisfactory remark, just a painkiller. He added, he is not going to take it as painkillers have only side effects and pain management is just symptomatic relief, not a cure. Well, NSAIDs are more than just painkillers. Pain is induced because of pathological changes in tissues either by injury or infection or an auto-immune mechanism, simply called inflammation. During inflammation, inflammatory mediators are released. An interesting fact is, little of the little inflammatory mediators can attract more of the inflammatory mediators and the chain of inflammation prolongs. NSAIDs help to break the chain of inflammation by suppressing pain and fever-causing inflammatory mediators. So when a doctor is prescribing NSAID, it is

Papaya: Fruits with multi-faceted clinical benefits

Image
As summer is just knocking on the doorstep, street vendors' cart is filled with papayas and melons. If you think about why you should pick papayas, this piece of writing is going to be an idea of why papaya can be a good choice for you. Meanwhile, I do not intend to overshadow the benefits of other fruits. Papaya has been elaborately discussed in the scientific platform for its positive clinical outcomes. Not just fruit in general but its overall parts like leaves, bark, latex, and seeds have clinical significance. However, the content will be more focused on fruit as this is what we are more concerned with. ·          Papaya fruit is rich in antioxidants that add good value to anti-aging and overall immunity. ·          Since papaya is low in calories and sugar, it is an ideal food for weight loss and suitable for diabetics. ·          Due to its ample content of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and folic acid, papaya is found to be a good choice of fruit in pregnancy. Though, it sho
